Songs in Open D Tuning:

The following songs are common modern era songs that should be pretty recognizable. There are plenty of traditional songs that are popular within the “open d community”, but the goal with this post was to assemble a convenient place to access more ‘accessible’ songs to beginners, or those that just want to learn some popular songs.

Each song below has a video so you can listen to how it sounds. In the descriptions below each video there is a link to a video lesson on the song. This is a smaller, more detailed version of our “big list of open d songs“.

Big Yellow Taxi – Joni Mitchell

The legendary Joni Mitchell played many songs in open d tuning. This particular song has been covered countless times by countless artists. There is a video lesson of this song here.

She Talks to Angels – The Black Crows

A huge radio hit in the 1990′s that is still going strong. So much so that we wonder if this song is the reason Kate Hudson decided to marry the lead singer …

Technically in open e, this song is played with a capo on the second fret. There is a video lesson of this song here.

The Cave – Mumford and Sons

Clearly the most current of the songs on the list, Mumford and Sons have been instrumental in bringing folk back to the masses with radio friendly indie tunes. This is one of their more popular ones and it just so happens to be in open d – lucky us! And yet again, a video lesson right here!

A Simple Twist of Fate – Bob Dylan

Of course, you can’t compile a list of songs in open d tuning without an early Bob Dylan classic. We don’t want to upset anyone so we figured we should put this one up. There are plenty of video lessons out there, so we just picked the first one here. Enjoy!

We hope you’ve enjoyed this list. We plan on putting more of these together and possibly do some individual songs that are more in depth right here on the site so you don’t have to switch pages to learn. Let us know if there are any songs you are eager to have up and we will see what we can do.
